At the end of 2018, another publication by the team of Laboratory of Media Studies UW was released - a multi-author monograph entitled "Tweeting Donald Trump. What is Twitter for users, journalists and the US President? From discourse analysis to eye-tracking research "(T. Gackowski, K. Brylska, M. Patera and others; reviewed by Agnieszka Hess (PhD) from the Jagiellonian University and professor Radosław Pawelec from the University of Warsaw). The authors present a multifaceted review of an interesting media and political phenomenon, which is the use of social media (on the example of Twitter) as a tool for shaping modern "soft power". This concept is based on the ability to shape other people's preferences without the use of pressure or violence, but rather with the help of a country's cultural resources. In this process, various diplomatic practices and communication tools useful at the international level are used, including Twitter, whose growing importance in conducting public diplomacy is reflected in the increasingly popular term "Twiplomacy".
In the book Tweeting Donald Trump, we present a research project which the aim was to gain knowledge in three thematic areas: 1) what Donald Trump's activity on Twitter looked like in a specific period important for the politician - when he tried to fulfill one of the most important promises of the campaign, that is, replace Obamacare; 2) how this activity resonated in the Polish press discourse; 3) whether and how social media users use Twitter and how they rate Trump's activities on this platform.
The project was divided into four interrelated parts, which were mapped in the structure of the monograph. The first part of the study was an analysis of the US President's Twitter profile. The second part was devoted to the analysis of Polish press discourse - it was checked whether Polish journalists (and experts) reliably recall Trump's online statements (tweets), as well as how and in what contexts Polish print media wrote about the communication of the President through Twitter. The third part of the project included a survey on how to use social media, while the fourth was an analysis of the reception of social media (especially Twitter) - focused group interviews and eye-tracking .
The book has also an annex presenting the results of the CATI survey on the opinion of Poles about the official visit of Donald Trump in Poland and the presidency of this politician.
